PW EXPLAINED CASE · MARS / ANOMALY · STATUS: LIKELY SENSOR ARTIFACT
A dark shape sitting on a Martian ridge looks enough like a jellyfish, tripod or machine that the obvious first reaction is: what is that thing?
The good news for anyone tired of fake Mars screenshots is that this one really does come from NASA.
Curiosity recorded the underlying image with its Right Navigation Camera on Sol 3924 of the mission in August 2023. The frame later resurfaced online in 2026 and spread because a small dark anomaly appears above or along the distant terrain.

PRIMARY IMAGE & ATTRIBUTION CHECK
The image above links to NASA’s original Curiosity Right Navcam record for Sol 3924; the separately linked earlier frame is a comparison, not proof of the cause. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech. The article’s illustrated cover image is a visualization, not NASA imagery. NASA has not issued an identified cause for this particular mark in the materials reviewed here; the sensor-artifact hypothesis remains an inference.
NASA’s media guidelines generally permit factual editorial use with source attribution, subject to third-party rights and no implied agency endorsement. NASA has not endorsed Paranormal Warehouse or its interpretation of this image.
THE IMAGE ITSELF IS AUTHENTIC
NASA’s raw-image archive preserves Curiosity imagery from Sol 3924, and the agency also published stitched panoramas from the rover’s navigation cameras from that period in Gale Crater.
So the central question is not whether somebody Photoshopped a creature into a Mars picture. It is whether the unusual mark represents something physically standing in the landscape or something that happened inside the imaging system.
THE BIG PROBLEM: IT DOES NOT STAY THERE
The anomaly appears in a single frame and is absent from nearby images of the same general area taken around the same sequence.
That behavior is difficult to reconcile with a stationary object sitting on a distant ridge unless it moved extremely quickly between exposures. It is much more consistent with a transient image artifact.
NASA HAS SEEN THIS KIND OF THING BEFORE
NASA explicitly documents visual artifacts in Curiosity imagery caused by energetic particles hitting camera detectors. During a major solar storm in May 2024, the rover’s navigation cameras recorded numerous streaks and specks when charged particles reached the Martian surface.
NASA has also explained that cosmic-ray hits can create anything from dots to longer streaks depending on how a particle strikes the detector. Similar events can appear in one camera frame and vanish from a nearly simultaneous image.
That is a much better fit for a one-frame anomaly than a large unknown organism or machine conveniently disappearing before the next useful image.
WHY DOES IT LOOK SO MUCH LIKE A THING?
Human vision is extremely good at turning incomplete shapes into recognizable objects. Give us a compact dark mass with a few thin extensions and our brains immediately start offering categories: jellyfish, tripod, robot, creature.
The low resolution makes that effect stronger. There is not enough detail to reveal structure, so a tiny cluster of abnormal pixels can inherit whatever interpretation best matches its silhouette.
DOES NASA SAY THIS SPECIFIC FRAME WAS A COSMIC RAY?
We have not identified a NASA case note assigning an official cause to this exact viral anomaly. The sensor-artifact explanation is an inference based on the one-frame behavior and NASA’s documented examples of energetic-particle artifacts in rover cameras.
That distinction is worth preserving. “Likely camera artifact” is better supported than either “confirmed alien object” or “NASA officially debunked this exact frame.”
PW TAKE
Current PW status: Likely sensor artifact. The underlying NASA image is authentic, but the anomaly’s one-frame appearance and NASA’s documented history of energetic-particle artifacts make a camera-detector event the strongest explanation.
This is a good example of why “the image is real” and “the object is real” are two completely different claims.
