Gettysburg’s 2001 ‘Marching Figures’ Video: What the Underwoods Actually Recorded

In October 2001, Delia and Tom Underwood filmed strange lights and figure-like forms at Gettysburg’s Triangular Field. Delia later said they looked like soldiers marching through the trees. The footage is famous; the cause remains unverified.

PW EVIDENCE FILE · GHOSTS & HAUNTINGS · STATUS: UNVERIFIED / HISTORIC VIDEO

One of Gettysburg’s most famous ghost videos does not show a full-body apparition walking toward the camera. It is stranger than that: brief lights and pale figure-like shapes appear to move through the trees at the edge of the Triangular Field.

Delia and Tom Underwood recorded the footage at Gettysburg in 2001. In a later interview, Delia said it was an evening in October; a separate video listing says November. Delia also identified the location, people present and what she believed she saw. The exact recording date remains unverified.

SOURCE CHECK: THE RECORDING DATE IS DISPUTED

In a 2008 interview, eyewitness Delia Underwood identified the evening as October 2001. A later video listing describes the recording as November 2001. The original camera master and contemporaneous dated documentation have not been established, so October reflects Delia’s account rather than an independently confirmed date.

Location context: See a National Park Service photograph of the Triangular Field near Devil’s Den (modern documentary photo, not a frame from the 2001 video). NPS identifies its unmarked NPS-credited photographs as public domain.

WHAT THE UNDERWOODS SAID HAPPENED

Delia said she and her husband regularly visited Gettysburg on weekends to film and take photographs in hopes of capturing something unusual. On this particular evening, they set up a video camera aimed down the Triangular Field toward a large flat rock.

The voices heard on the recording, she said, belonged to Delia, Tom and their son Justin.

According to Delia, the first unusual activity looked like rapid flashes near a bush roughly 15 feet from the flat rock. She said those lights were visible both to the naked eye and on the camera.

Then she noticed shapes moving farther back among the trees. Her later description was specific: the figures looked to her like soldiers marching upward through the wooded area. She said the event lasted only a few seconds and produced no sound.

WHY THE LOCATION MATTERS

The Triangular Field sits in the southern portion of Gettysburg National Military Park near Devil’s Den. The surrounding ground saw intense fighting on July 2, 1863, when Confederate attacks struck the Union left around Devil’s Den, the Wheatfield and the Round Tops.

The field’s stone walls and nearby terrain remain part of the preserved battlefield landscape. That history is why apparent “marching soldiers” immediately carry a powerful interpretation at this location.

It is also exactly why context can influence perception. If the same vague forms appeared beside an ordinary tree line, viewers might not interpret them as Civil War soldiers at all.

COULD IT HAVE BEEN HEADLIGHTS?

One long-running conventional explanation is reflected light from vehicles or another distant light source interacting with vegetation, haze or the camera itself.

Delia rejected that explanation. In her interview, she said the night was clear, there was no fog and the family later tested the vehicle-light idea without reproducing what they had recorded.

That test is useful witness context, but we do not have a documented controlled reconstruction of the road traffic, camera settings, lens position and environmental conditions from the 2001 recording. Without those controls or a verified original master, the public cannot independently rule the vehicle-light hypothesis in or out.

THE CAMERA PROBLEM

Low-light video can produce shapes that look far more structured than they are. Bright points can bloom. Moving branches can merge with compression. Autofocus, exposure changes and analog or early-digital recording artifacts can make faint lights smear or pulse between frames.

The figures in the Underwood footage are not detailed enough to identify uniforms, faces or bodies. The “marching soldier” interpretation comes primarily from how the moving forms look to the witness and viewers, not from visible anatomical detail.

WHAT MAKES THE CASE BETTER THAN A RANDOM GHOST CLIP

  • The witnesses are named.
  • The location is specific: Gettysburg’s Triangular Field.
  • The event is dated to 2001; Delia says October, while a later listing says November.
  • Delia gave a direct account of what the family saw and heard.
  • She addressed the vehicle-light explanation, although the test has not been independently documented.

WHAT WE STILL DO NOT HAVE

  • A publicly available original master file with technical metadata.
  • A precise date and clock time.
  • A documented reconstruction using the same camera and environmental conditions.
  • Independent measurements establishing the apparent figures’ distance or size.
  • Physical evidence linking the lights to a paranormal source.

PW TAKE

Current PW status: Unverified. The Underwood video has a much better witness trail than most old internet ghost clips, but the footage itself does not contain enough visual information to establish that the moving forms were apparitions.

The most useful thing about this case is that the witness account survived. We know where the family says they were, what they were trying to film and what Delia believed she saw. That lets us study the case without pretending the phrase “marching soldiers” is something the camera objectively proved.
