PW EVIDENCE FILE ยท GHOSTS & HAUNTINGS ยท STATUS: UNEXPLAINED / NOT VERIFIED PARANORMAL
A dark shape moves where investigators say no person should have been. That alone is not proof of a ghostโbut at Strauss Mansion in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, the shadow footage sits inside a much longer record of paranormal investigations at the property.
THE LOCATION
The Strauss Mansion was built in 1893 as a 21-room Queen Anne-style summer home for wealthy New York merchant Adolph Strauss. The Atlantic Highlands Historical Society purchased the deteriorating property in 1980 and opened it as a museum in 1986. The mansion was later listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places.
Its paranormal reputation is not just an internet invention. Historian and investigator Greg Caggiano, who served on the Historical Societyโs board, has written extensively about investigations conducted there beginning in 2013.
ORIGINAL INVESTIGATOR ACCOUNT & FOOTAGE ACCESS
Read Greg Caggianoโs first-person account, published by the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society. He identifies a shadow at a second-floor bathroom window following the Halloween 2014 investigation and says a video was made available on YouTube. That publisher account is the provenance starting point; PW has not independently obtained the camera master or cleared rehosting rights for the clip.
Image disclosure: The featured mansion-and-shadow image on this page is editorial artwork, not an original photograph, film frame or depiction of a verified apparition. The historical societyโs site carries its own copyright notice, so its photographs will not be copied into PW without permission.
THE SHADOW FOOTAGE
In a 2019 article published by the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society, Caggiano described what his team considered its best visual evidence at the mansion: a shadow moving around a second-floor bathroom window during an investigation following a Halloween event in 2014.
He also described a separate later incident in which a viewer noticed a shadow moving across a bookcase behind investigators while they were filming in the library. According to Caggiano, the team did not notice that movement at the time of recording.
Those details matter because they give us a traceable person, location and investigation history. They do not establish that the shadows were spirits.
WHAT ELSE HAS BEEN REPORTED?
Caggianoโs first-person accounts describe footsteps when investigators believed upper floors were empty, disembodied voices, shadow movement, objects appearing to move and responses heard through paranormal equipment. He has also emphasized that many investigations produce little or nothing unusual.
The Historical Society has hosted public ghost-hunting events and allows private paranormal investigations at the property, so the mansion has been examined repeatedly rather than relying on a single viral clip.
THE SKEPTICAL PROBLEM WITH SHADOW EVIDENCE
Shadow footage is difficult evidence to evaluate. A person outside the cameraโs view, changing exposure, reflected light, compression, movement near a light source or an object close to the lens can create shapes that seem to cross a distant surface.
To establish something stronger, investigators would ideally need synchronized camera angles, a documented room layout, control of every person present and the original uncompressed video. Public descriptions of the Strauss clips do not provide enough of that information for us to rule out conventional causes.
WHY THIS CASE IS STILL INTERESTING
What keeps Strauss Mansion interesting is provenance. The people discussing the evidence are not anonymous repost accounts. The mansionโs historical organization has openly discussed the investigations, Caggiano has written about what his team experienced, and the location has years of documented paranormal programming.
That makes the case more useful than a random โshadow personโ clip stripped of contextโeven though it still falls far short of scientific proof.
PW TAKE
Current PW status: Unexplained visual evidence, not verified paranormal activity. The footage deserves a closer look because its source and location are traceable. But without the raw files and stronger environmental controls, a shadow remains a shadowโnot a confirmed apparition.
